1944 yılında İstanbul'da doğdu Aslen Malatyalıdır. Vefa Lisesi'nden mezun oldu.
Sanat hayatı, 'Zoraki Tabip' adlı tiyatro oyunuyla başladı.
1 yıl kadar Kenterler Tiyatrosu'nda çalıştıktan sonra Devekuşu Kabare Tiyatrosu'nda görev aldı.
1973 yılında Ertem Eğilmez'in yönettiği bir filmle sinemaya adımını attı ve kalabalık kadrolu filmlerde rol almaya başladı.
Türk sinemasında başta İnek Şaban tiplemesi olmak üzere canlandırdığı pek çok tiple sevenlerinin kalbinde taht kuran Kemal Sunal, 7'den 70'e herkesin sevgisini kazandı.
Türk sinemasının en büyük komedyenlerinden biri olan Sunal, peşpeşe çevirdiği filmlerle ticari açıdan büyük başarı kazandı.
Filimlerde çoğu zaman saf,sansli ama iyi yurekli karakterlerin rollerine girdi.1974 yılında evlendi. Ali ve Ezo adlarında, biri kız diğeri erkek iki çocuğu oldu.
1977'de Antalya Film Festivali'nde En İyi Erkek Oyuncu ödülünü alan Sunal, oyunculuğu ve özellikle değişik tiplemesiyle Türk sinemasında komedi oyunculuğuna yeni bir soluk getirdi.
1990'lı yıllardan itibaren filmleri kesintisiz olarak televizyonlarda yayımlanmaya başladı; ama kendisi bu gösterimlerden hiç para kazanmadı.
12 Eylül öncesi dönemde yarım bıraktığı üniversiteyi, Marmara Üniversitesi İletişim Fakültesi Radyo Televizyon ve Sinema Bölümünü'nden mezun olarak 1995 yılında bitirdi ve yüksek lisans yapmaya başladı.
Hayatı boyunca toplam 82 filmde rol aldı. 3 Temmuz 2000 tarihinde Balalayka adlı filmin çekimlerine başlamak için Trabzon'a gitmek üzere bindiği uçakta kalkıştan hemen önce geçirdiği kalp krizi sonucu hayata gözlerini yumdu.
